Reflecting On July 2023

Fireworks from Jul 4th, 2023 in Boston.

Summer Swung

July was just awesome. It was such a fun month, and I feel like if you asked me during the month how I was doing I’d have said “good, but tired”. While that may have been true then, the tire (is that the right past-tense noun for the state of being tired?) was well worth it.

I could write a long-winded and exploratory article detailing everything I did that month and talking about where I was each day, but I think that would be a lot to read (I started doing that, and trust me it was).

Instead, here are my favorite four `scape photos from the month.

Reflective Waters

This first shot might not be to everyone’s taste. It’s got a lot of dead space – and there’s not a lot going on in the image. But to me this is what makes the image shine.

Reflective waters, after a stormy day in July 2023.

This image leaves the scene to the viewers imagination in a lot of ways. There’s a lot of darkness surrounding the edges of the image and I think that it accentuates the bit of color there is in the image. Not only the blue hues of the sky but the stark pink and red contrasting against the coming night-sky.

Cold Stream

This is quintessential landscape photography. A stunning sky, layers and contrast, and a subject on the left third. What more can you really ask for? I needed to wake up around 5AM for this image, but it was well worth it. Especially when the walk to take this image was roughly a minute from my bed.

Flooded Rivers

If you didn’t know throughout July and August of 2023, New England has been assaulted by rain and storms. On July 23rd, I wanted to see what one of my favorite waterfalls in the region (Bash Bish Falls) looked like with the flood-waters roaring through.

The several-hour drive was worth the pay-off. I was able to get the place entirely to myself, and the view of the sun as it eventually did rise through the valley and forest was sublime. The photos I got of the falls that day were great (check out this video to see them) but my favorite shot was at the end of the day, looking back on the sun engulfing the river.

Falling Waters, Blurring Rivers

To cap it off, we have this image from the end of the month. After witnessing lightning and torrential rain-fall, we were granted a first-row view to what was the most dramatic sunset I’ve seen to-date in 2023.

The colors were off-the charts and they didn’t stop until well after the sun had set. This was one of the final images I’d shot that evening and I’m glad that I took the time to do so. It ended up being my favorite from that night. You can see more of the images from that night in this video of mine.

I took images on 24 of the days in July 2023. That’s a successful month for me. Not only did I take great images but more importantly I practiced my craft and got even better at it. I love getting lost behind my camera. You should try it sometime.
