Colorado

Skeletal Outreach
October 1st
This image motivated us to visit Golden Gate Canyon later that week with Sophie and her father. I ripped over after work – and spent some time exploring the area. Right before leaving I walked in the direction I skipped upon arrival, and the image I got was my favorite from the night. I love the contrast of the aspen branch with the grade of color behind it.

The Twins In October
October 3rd
I quite like this rendition of a similar image I’d shot all the way back in June. I’d originally intended on shooting this location for sunset two nights prior, but the best of the light was happening when I was further in the valley and I didn’t think I’d make it in time. I like the soft light of the rising sun on the far off mountains.

June’s Did It Better
October 3rd
While the clouds here are spectacular, the foggy rendition from June is far more atmospheric and I think a far stronger composition. You can see those renditions under the June 14th header in this post, Deep In Colorado – June 2026.

As The Car Runs Down
October 3rd
This was an opportune shot if I’ve ever seen one. I’d let Sophie take over driving and sat in the passenger seat as we drove down towards the trailhead. I wanted to shoot as we drove. I’m glad I did – this picture is great. I love the light on the mountains in the distance – and the motion of the trees as we zoom past is a great added detail.

Split The Difference
October 3rd
I quite like the balance of this image. Two trunks in the front with leaves turning in the most beautiful of ways and the trees in the rear just existing in the space offering a parallel to those in the foreground.

Rapid Run
October 4th
The following day we rode a train in Royal Gorge. It was a ton of fun – but we started late which made the photography a bit tricky. However I was able to get this image near the beginning of the ride which I quite like. Again the motion of the moving train I think creates a nice effect.
Washington
We’d be in Washington only for a few days, but I managed to snag some images I’m quite happy with.

View From The Front
October 16th
Thanks to the kind people on Reddit (here) I know the names of these mountains (beyond the obvious). In the front is Mt. Rainier. On the far left is Mt. Adams. Right above Rainier is Mt. Saint Helens, and in the distance is Mt. Hood (all the way in Oregon). I took this photo on the flight in to Seattle on Friday.

Public Market
October 16th
That evening we went into the city and were once again treated to a beautiful display of color. We got very lucky that day with sunrises and sunsets not disappointing. After this we went to Ohana Belltown for some sushi. It was really good Sushi!

Edmonds
October 17th
After an overnight rain we got some lovely foliage at our feet.

The Arboretum’s Splendor
October 17th
Later that day after having some wonderful lunch (lobster rolls) we wound up in the Arboretum. It was a stunning fall afternoon – and this image as the light fades in through the far off trees is lovely. I love the green framing the red of the changing maple (?) leaves behind.

Hello Gourd-geous!
October 18th
The next day we again found ourselves walking around downtown Edmonds. This time the thing that stuck out to me was the pumpkins. I snagged this image of the texture of their skins alongside some leaves which had found their way into the cracks of the pumpkins arrangement.
Massachusetts In 36 Hours
This was it. Going into October we knew this would be the most hectic weekend of the month and it delivered. After numerous flight delays, we landed at 1 AM on Saturday October 24th and were in the air heading home around 11:52 on Sunday October 25th. Less than 36 hours. The fact that I got any photography in is a Godsend. We were in town on a mission. The photography was a happy bonus.

Needles & Frost
October 24th
If you’ve been following me for any significant amount of time you’ll know that I love photographing the landscape at my feet (and other intimate landscape scenes). On this whirlwind of a weekend I really didn’t have time for anything but that on the few mornings I spent at my home. Luckily, the frost this time of year in MA is almost a given – and this year was no exception.

That’s Not Stock
October 24th
Hand crafted imagery!

The Cornucopia
October 25th
The final image before we got on our flight back home was a good one. The grass had gotten a thorough frosting – and the leaves were crisp and crunchy under our feet. But shortly thereafter we were high in the sky heading back to Colorado.

Summary
We lovingly called this month, the “October of Obligations”. While it was exhausting, we wouldn’t have done it any other way. Spending time with friends and family should always be cherished and the memories we made this month are ones I’m sure we’ll talk about for years to come.
