Spending time photographing the streets of Copenhagen (POTW 27, 2024)

Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities in the world. I got a chance to visit again in May 2024, and it was just as good as I remembered it from 2019.

These are the images we’ll be examining in this article, click on any of them for a closer look!

In May 2024, I got just under a full-day in Copenhagen when Sophie and I had our return-flight from Faroe (read about that here) rescheduled. To say I was pleased would be a gross understatement. Getting to go back to Copenhagen AND share it with Sophie was so exciting. To top it off – we had phenomenal weather the entire time we were there, what more could two people ask for!?

Our First Evening

The first night flew by. After we arrived, we left the airport and took a taxi ride (a horrible mistake) into the city. We quickly noticed once we got off the interstate that the driver was purposefully taking wrong turns to add fare to the trip and I eventually told him that we’d get out and leg it from where we were.

He was surprised we caught on but did as we requested. From there we walked to our Hotel with our suitcases and backpacks in tow and checked into one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed at, 25 Hours Hotel Indre By (Indre By we learnt means downtown).

After that we began walking around and spent the whole evening walking around and exploring Copenhagen. There are no open container laws there – and I made use of that fact. The whole night we explored I was drinking beers the hotel had provided free of charge. It was heavenly. We walked over to the Kastellet, which is an armory a ways away from our hotel that I’d visited before and wanted to show Sophie.

After our exploration, of the armory we began walking back towards Indre By. Along the way, we had stopped for ice cream – grabbed some dinner and even got to walk and see a bunch of rollerbladers pass us by. Eventually though it was time to tuck in and rest – we had a long day ahead of us tomorrow.

Our Only Morning

The next morning I woke up at 05:00 – and began exploring Copenhagen. I was determined to be out there for sunrise even if I didn’t photograph any dramatic cloud coverage (as there was none). But being out in the early morning meant two things:

Firstly, I got to take advantage of the city all to myself. I barely saw a soul other than me out there, and was free to take as long as I wanted playing with the compositions as I wanted, with no worry of bumping in to someone else. I spent some time watching the sunrise by Nyhavn – it was a delight.

After that I kept walking for quite some time and eventually found myself in a courtyard. The light was well on it’s way through the scenes I was shooting now. The large yellow umbrellas acted as a soft-box and diffused the light coming in. The result was a wonderfully warm scene which was a joy to photograph.

This morning really was exceptional. I even got a chance to bike around the city a bit before my day had fully began. What more can you ask for in a morning in the city?

Once it did begin, I grabbed Sophie and we went to the best bakery I’ve ever been to, which was photographed in this image. It was Skt. Peders Bageri, and we grabbed a few different pastries there. The one that blew us away the most was the cinnamon roll. I doubt I’ll ever have one as good as I did that morning again. That fact haunts me.

Sophie and I rented some bikes and spent most of the day biking. It was truly idyllic it was cool by the water and the breeze biking helped us cool off. By that time most of the light had come and gone, but I got what I wanted out of the brief time in Copenhagen.

Another amazing memory.
