Cracks In The Sandstone
After a salmon dinner at my motel restaurant, I went to Capitol Reef for sunset. While stuck at a long construction road stop-light, the best of the light came and went. After passing the construction, I pulled off to fire off a few shots capturing the remnants of light, but they’re just okay. It goes without saying that the geology was stunning. However I wasn’t too sold on the composition I found. Undeterred I continued on towards the destination of the night.

I began hiking out to Sunrise Point at sun-down and by the time I reached the main overlook I was deep into dusk. The cool tones in the sky granted a nice color set on the scenes around me. At this point, I did something I love to do when stuck looking for a composition, I looked at my feet.
The cracked and weather worn sandstone that I’d been trekking on offered up a beautiful subject matter. Now all I needed was to find the right set of cracks to shoot.
I was looking for a set of leading lines in the sandstone that all brought the viewer to a central point in the frame. Eventually, I found the set of cracks photographed above. The color of the sandstone was just as good (if not better) than the color of the sunset that evening, and my composition far stronger.
From here I began walking to the trail-head, satisfied with the evenings shoot.
