Photo Of The Week (Week 50, 2023): Snow On Red

Good friends, a great snow-storm, and an image to remember it all. What else could you want!
Stepping Out In A Snowstorm

I’m on a lovely trip with my friends to Vermont. We were planning on going skiing, but the weather forecast has other plans. Snow begins drifting down. The stark winter drowns the house and property, forcing us to make the judgement call on whether or not we postpone our skiing or risk the roads.

Location:

Danby, Vermont

Date:

Winter, 2023

Camera:

Fujifilm GFX100S

I decide to step outside and photograph the red barns near the edge of the property to clear my head.

The snow drifts were high, but my snow pants were higher. As I trudged over I begin framing up the composition. The weight of the scene was hard to nail and truthfully I’m not certain that I nailed it.

I needed to find something to place in the bottom of the image otherwise it would become too top-heavy. I ended up finding a few stray-reeds standing above the snow and used those as my subject. It worked well enough. I think if I were to try and perfect this image back on location, I’d try and re-frame the scene. I’d get lower and closer to the reeds. But hey, I love the image as it is, and sometimes imperfection is perfect.
