I struggle shooting black and white photography.
I find it incredibly hard to find landscapes that suit themselves to the monochromatic color space a black and white image provides. However there are moments when those scenes present themselves to me. This image is one that I took on the initial day of my trip to the Mountain West in 2023.
I was driving along the Sacajawea Historic Byway (Id. Rt. 28) when I began climbing into the mountains and what was a soft drizzle of snow at the base began turning into a fair dusting of snow falling down all around me. Pulled off to the side of the road, I looked around me trying to find the right image to showcase this landscape. Then I looked to my left and saw the way the clouds hid the peaks of the mountains.
The shadowy foreground hills fading into the bright all white of the top of the scene works incredibly well to present a well-balanced image. It’s one that I’m happy to admire.
