I’ve seen many sunrises on Cape Cod. There have been dramatic ones which leave you speechless. There’s also been subtle ones which light up the sky in pastel hues that never seem to go away. This was a tamer one. After arriving at Coast Guard beach I watched the sun briefly illuminate the horizon in those dreamy pink hues acting as the perfect counterweight to the rich and dark blues of the sky above.
As I watched the lightshow, the sun peaked over the horizon. The scenes I’d been photographing were thrown into stunning bright orange light. In a few moments we went from nothing to harsh direct sun. Just like that – the sunrise was over. I began to pack up my gear and begin the commute home.
Along the way back to my car, I noticed a look-out just a few hundred feet beyond my parking spot. What the hell – I decided that while I was there it was worth checking out. I’m cheery that I did make the call to go out. That’s where I got this image.
Why Do I Like This Image?
It’s all about the curves.
The S Curve of the center grass. The complimentary curves of the tidal pool on the right and the dark bush on the bottom left. All of which lead the viewer into the center of the image. Dropping them off to a wonderful gradient of white to a uniform blue hue. Offering a heavenly contrast to the green and yellow hues of the coastal Cape Cod grass just below.
I’ve had the pleasure of traveling all over the coast of New England. I’ve seen the cliff-faces of Rhode Island, the rocky rugged coast line of Maine and the small bit of coast and beaches that New Hampshire even has. For my money though, this is what coastal New England looks like. I grew up going to the Cape with family. These grassy shores are what I used to call home and I can’t wait to go back again.
