Black & White Photography (Photo Of The Week 24, 2024)

In POTW 23, I mentioned that I struggle with black & white photography. That's all we're going to be covering for a little bit. I wanna get better at it.

Contrary to what I mentioned in the last post First Snow Of 2023 on June 10th, I shot black and white. Even though I start that post saying “I struggle shooting black and white”, I thought it would be a fun challenge for myself.

What I should have said there was “I struggle shooting black and white landscapes“. Ya see in the city, I adore shooting black and white.

I often find that the hard light that I come across on the days I spend in the city lend itself to a simpler color set. When I’m shooting black and white I always reach for Fujifilm’s ACROS film simulation.

On this day I decided to use the Yellow Filter version to darken the skies and the results are some that I’m really fond of.

The image up top was taken on my walk to work as I waltzed through the Christopher Columbus park. Honestly, I’m fairly certain that I’ve shot almost this same exact image before – but that’s okay.

Sometimes it’s just nice to take a photograph.

The second image I am far less confident in whether or not I’ve shot it prior. It was taken along the Boston Harborwalk in Seaport. I was sitting in the grass with Sophie watching the clouds roll by and chatting about our day. It was a divine way to kill an hour or so and as we waited I began to notice the light all around us.

I ripped out my camera – and I took this shot.

What do you think of it?
