Amethyst Brook In Snow (Photo Of The Week #14, 2024)

Frosty post-blizzard sunrises rarely disappoint and this morning was no exception to the rule.

A rare occurrence, an image of me making it into one of my articles!

From Fall 2019 → Spring 2020 I lived in Amherst, MA in my final year of my undergrad. It was a pretty good winter from what I recall, with a good amount of decent snow days (far more than I’ve got since moving to Boston).

At the time I lived in a house with a few different roommates and one of them, Kaitlyn and I both loved hiking and getting out in nature. One morning (December 7th), we decided to go for a sunrise hike right after a snowstorm – and it was stunning. We went to a place I frequented during that era of my life, Amethyst Brook.

Upon first arriving at the brook – we had a walk ahead of us. We cut through the community gardens the area is used for and went over the bridge towards the far side of the Conservation area. At this end of the field there’s a large field which I wanted to reach. My plan was to photograph the sunrise there as the sun illuminated the western bank of the trees.

When we got out to the main “field” that Amethyst Brook surrounds there was a very light fog on the far ends of the field from us. The sun was just beginning to rise and warm some of the far-ends of the scene. I put the telephoto lens on my camera, zoomed in on this lone frozen over brush and snapped the photo.

After exploring more with Kaitlyn I decided that this was the best “angle” I could achieve of this subject. After walking around and exploring the field more the sun began to really rise in the sky. We transitioned out of blue hour to the “golden minutes” (it felt like a brief sunrise). Eventually the sun hit the far side of the field illuminating the trees in a bright crimson. The view was spectacular.

After these images, Kaitlyn and I decided to head home. It was a lovely morning but it was time to warm back up and get ready for the rest of the Saturday.

I hope you enjoyed reading this memory as much as I enjoyed writing it. I’ll see you in the next one.
